Fire Department Profile

North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department is a combination department staffed by 56 career staff and 16 volunteer firefighters. The department serves the northeastern portion of Chatham County and a small portion of southern Orange County, North Carolina.  We were founded in 1968 and currently operate out of 7 stations which cover about 205 square miles in Chatham County. North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department is one of the largest, if not the largest rural fire department in North Carolina. The fire department has experienced rapid growth in the past 15 years, as the district is moving from a rural community to urban.

John Strowd is the Fire Chief, Mark Riggsbee is Deputy Chief, Ronnie Page is Assistant Chief and Cindy Allen is Administrative Assistant. There are 3 shifts supported by a Captain, Lieutenants, Fire Engineers, Firefighter/Drivers, Firefighters and Volunteer Officers.  We responded to 1915 incidents in 2019 which included responses to structural fires, woods fires, fire alarms, vehicle fires, automobile accidents, emergency medical calls, land search and recovery, swift water rescue, dive rescue and recovery and rope rescue. All 7 stations have career personnel assigned and supported by volunteers. Our most recent apparatus purchase was a 2019 101' Rosenbauer Cobra Aerial Platform. We also have a second 95' E-ONE Aerial Platfrm, along with 7 Engines, 8 Tankers, 3 Rescue's, Utilities, Squads and a variety of specialty equipment from dive, to swift water and trench.

North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department was re-evaluated by OSFM in September 2019. Prior to September 2019 our ISO rating was a Class 6. We now have a new ISO rating of Class 4 fire district wide within 5 road miles of any of our fire stations. The ISO Class 4 takes effect March 1, 2020. We are very proud of the new rating and for our career personnel, volunteers and Board of Directors who actively worked long hours through training and responses to improve the fire rating for the district, along with our automatic aid departments. Truly a team effort. Effective 10-01-2006, we also were granted a 9E rating for the area between 5 and 6 road miles from any of our stations. This entitles any structure within 6 road miles of any of our fire stations to a reduction in their fire insurance premiums.

North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department maintains the following qualifications through the North Carolina Rescue Association: Medium Duty Rescue, Still Water Rescue, Swift Water Rescue and Dive Rescue.

I encourage you to monitor our website for updates and North Chatham Facebook as we continually provide updated information. We currently have 2 Firefighter positions open and we accept applications year round. If you are interested in a progressive, growing fire department who has a supportive Board of Directors and a training agenda schedule for personnel to meet the challenges of our Fire District, please call and inquire about additional information on how to apply and review our Pre-Employment Package. I also welcome you to visit and take a tour of our Fire Department.
